WELCOME!

Find everything you need to know about what's planned for Indigenous students for your UBC Orientations experience. In addition to these great events, your orientation to UBC will be comprised of a wide range of events being hosted from across the University.

These events are open to self-identified Indigenous students, faculty, staff and their guests.

Longhouse Welcome

Hello! Dosha! My name is Margaret Moss. I am the director of the First Nations House of Learning (FNHL), located in the First Nations Longhouse. I am also a professor in the School of Nursing. I am an enrolled member of the Three Affiliated Tribes of North Dakota – the Mandan, Hidatsa, and Arikara Nation – with equal lineage to the Dakota in Saskatchewan.

The UBC Vancouver campus sits on the traditional, ancestral and unceded territory of the Musqueam people. We hope you learn about the Musqueam and their history during your time at UBC.

As FNHL director, I am happy to tell you about some of the things we provide to help make your experience here at UBC even more fulfilling. The Longhouse hosts exciting events, the Virtual Indigenous Students’ Collegium, health and wellness programming, and numerous services for Indigenous students including counselling services, social programs and tutoring.

The Longhouse is tagged as a “Home Away from Home” for Indigenous students. Even though we will not be in the physical space this semester, we hope you will ‘come home’ and visit us virtually, no matter where your original home is, your level of study, or your unease at approaching this ‘new to you’ place.

We are here to welcome you!

– Margaret P. Moss, PhD, JD, RN, FAAN

Virtual Indigenous Student Collegia

Even though your classes might be online for your first term, it’s important to make friends and connect with your new UBC community. Our outstanding team of Indigenous student leaders will help you navigate your online student experience to ensure that you get peer support, connect to our Indigenous Elder, discover resources and opportunities and feel connected no matter where you are.

Feel connected by meeting with Indigenous student leaders and peers in on-line small groups from different communities, faculties and years of study. Take part in programing featuring relevant UBC resources and online social events or take part in cultural practices like smudging and community practices like talking circles. Whether you’re living on or off campus, you’ve been here for a while or you’re just getting started, the Virtual Indigenous Student Collegium is another way for you to find and build community at UBC..

University-wide events & activities

  • September

The AMS is committed to finding innovative ways to continue our start of the school year celebrations and positively impact the student experience in a safe and engaging way. We’re excited to showcase the best that campus (and in some cases, the city of Vancouver) has to offer, socially and culturally, through our trademark events and unique virtual experiences. In collaboration with niche campus clubs and organizations, we’ll be offering a variety of unique virtual events, in addition to smaller, more frequent, quality in-person events for students who may be on campus. Students can also check out our Instagram to keep up to date with our events as well as our brand new YouTube channel which includes videos that cover many topics about student life on campus. Visit the AMS website to learn more about what the AMS does and the 30+ events we have planned throughout the month of September. We’re your student society - no matter where in the world they are!

  • September 25 7 PM - 7:45 PM

Homecoming is the perfect way to have some fun with your UBC community, take part in campus traditions, and cheer on the UBC Thunderbirds. This year’s event will be a little different. As we can’t all be together, we’re hosting UBC’s biggest school spirit event as a fully virtual celebration, presented by RBC Royal Bank, featuring a line-up of musical performances like hip-hop/rap and soul artist, Missy D, along with UBC notables, and surprise guests.

Events & activities in your faculty

A great way to help you get orientated to life in your Faculty is by attending an Undergraduate Society event. Your Undergraduate Society is the student government located in your faculty. Events they host vary between faculties, but they are all designed to help you have fun, meet people and find your place in your Faculty community.
