WELCOME!

Find everything you need to know about what's planned for Indigenous students for your UBC Orientations experience. In addition to these great events, your orientation to UBC will be comprised of a wide range of events being hosted from across the University.

These events are open to self-identified Indigenous students, faculty, staff and their guests.

Longhouse Welcome

Hello! Dosha! My name is Margaret Moss. I am the director of the First Nations House of Learning (FNHL), located in the First Nations Longhouse at the UBC Vancouver Campus. I am also an associate professor in the School of Nursing. I am an enrolled member of the Three Affiliated Tribes of North Dakota – the Mandan, Hidatsa, and Arikara Nation – with equal lineage in a Dakhóta First Nation Saskatchewan.

The UBC Vancouver campus respectfully acknowledges its location on the traditional, ancestral and unceded territory of the Musqueam people. We hope you will learn more about the Musqueam, the land and their history during your time at UBC.

As the FNHL director, I am delighted to inform you about some of what we provide to help make your experience here at UBC even more fulfilling as a continuous approach to strengthening a sense of community on campus. The Longhouse hosts exciting social and cultural events, the Indigenous Student Collegium (ISC) is here for all who want to become members and provides a “home away from home”, health and wellness programming, and numerous services for Indigenous students including, counselling services, social programs and tutoring.

The Longhouse itself is designated as a "Home Away from Home" for Indigenous students. I am pleased to announce that we are prepared to safely head back to the physical space at the Longhouse. We are excited to welcome you all back to the Longhouse.

We are here to welcome you!

Margaret Moss

Virtual Indigenous Student Collegia

Even though your classes might be online for your first term, it’s important to make friends and connect with your new UBC community. Our outstanding team of Indigenous student leaders will help you navigate your online student experience to ensure that you get peer support, connect to our Indigenous Elder, discover resources and opportunities and feel connected no matter where you are.

Feel connected by meeting with Indigenous student leaders and peers in on-line small groups from different communities, faculties and years of study. Take part in programing featuring relevant UBC resources and online social events or take part in cultural practices like smudging and community practices like talking circles. Whether you’re living on or off campus, you’ve been here for a while or you’re just getting started, the Virtual Indigenous Student Collegium is another way for you to find and build community at UBC..

A great way to help you get orientated to life in your Faculty is by attending an Undergraduate Society event. Your Undergraduate Society is the student government located in your faculty. Events they host vary between faculties, but they are all designed to help you have fun, meet people and find your place in your Faculty community.
