Jump Start Accessibility FAQ
Welcome to Jump Start! We are committed to making sure every participant feels supported and included. Below are answers to common accessibility-related questions. If you don’t see your question here, feel free to contact us directly. We are happy to help!
There are official adaptations for students with documented, lasting disabilities or health conditions that create barriers to accessing their education at UBC. The Centre for Accessibility (CfA) provides academic accommodations and promotes equitable access to university programs and services. Learn more at: https://students.ubc.ca/about-student-services/centre-for-accessibility/
I use a mobility aid or have trouble walking long distances. What support is available?
The majority of the programming, including Learning Seminars with your faculty fellows and most day-time activities will be sitting. Similarly, the evening activities and socials will have seating options. Some programming such as the campus tour (approx 1.5h) will have a walking component around the UBC campus. However, a virtual version is available on the Explore at Your Own Pace canvas course. We encourage you to make a decision on individual events like this based on what you feel comfortable with.
If you ever need help getting around, you can use our accessibility shuttle, which is a shared ride service for students with mobility-related conditions. For pickup/drop-off locations, please refer to the map on the Shuttle website.
Tip: The shuttle has limited space, so rides are booked first-come first-served, preferably 1-2 days in advance, through calling 604 822 9929.
I have a learning disability. Will Jump Start be accessible to me?
Absolutely! Jump Start includes Learning Seminars that are low-pressure, practice-style sessions designed with flexibility in mind. If you need additional support, or if your learning disability affects your experience during Jump Start, we encourage you to reach out to us.
We also recommend that you register with the Centre for Accessibility (CfA) as they will be able to support you throughout your time at UBC. You can find more information here about what the Centre does and why students choose to connect with them.
I have a medical condition (e.g. diabetes) but it doesn’t affect my mobility. What should I know?
Please let us know if there is anything specific we can do as a Jump Start program to support you or if there is any information that would be helpful for us to provide in advance!
I am looking for some sensory friendly options during Jump Start. What are my options?
We understand that large events and busy environments can be overwhelming. While Jump Start includes a range of programming, there are flexible options to help you feel more comfortable:
- You're welcome to take breaks at any time! There's no pressure to attend every session.
- You can speak with your Orientation Leaders about quieter areas or less crowded events during the week.
I experience anxiety, ADHD, and/or other neurodevelopmental/mental health challenges. How flexible is programming?
We understand that everyone experiences campus differently. There are daily activities in Jump Start that we recommend attending (like Learning Seminars and learning community meet ups), our team would encourage you to make the experience your own – you are welcome to take breaks, opt out of some programming, or do what you need to do to ensure you are taking care.
Additionally, we would recommend asking your Jump Start leader throughout the week for information about what certain events will look like, so you can decide which programming might be best for you.
I have a hearing impairment. How will Jump Start work for me?
If you have hearing loss or need accommodations like microphones or front seating, we’re happy to help. We can discreetly let your leaders or instructors know that someone in the group requires louder speaking, without sharing your name or details. Please contact us for these support options!
I take medication and have a strict routine. What if Jump Start interferes with that?
Please continue to follow any medical or mental health routines that work for you. Jump Start programming is flexible—you can:
- Step away for breaks
- Come late or leave early to maintain your routine.
- Bring whatever you need for your care (e.g., snacks, water, fidget tools).
Let your Orientation Leader know if you’d like help planning around your schedule (they don’t need to know why unless you want to share).
I have a visual impairment, Will any of the sessions or events have visual supports?
We strive to make our sessions as inclusive as possible. If you require visual supports or large-print handouts, please let us know at orientations.jumpstart@ubc.ca so we can make arrangements ahead of time.
If you find that your impairment is having an impact on your academics, we would highly recommend registering with the Centre for Accessibility (CfA) as they will be able to support you throughout your time at UBC. You can find more information here about what the Centre does and why students choose to connect with them.
I have dietary restrictions or allergies. What should I know?
If you have allergies or specific concerns, please let us know in advance so we can work with you to make safe arrangements. For students in the Collegia stream, you are welcome (and encouraged) to bring your own meals and/or snacks. For students living in residence, meals will be served in the dining hall, and staff can help you navigate options and accommodations if needed.
My question wasn’t answered here, or I have a specific accessibility need. What should I do?
We’re here to help! If you have a question that isn’t covered above, or if you have a specific accessibility need you would like to discuss, please don’t hesitate to reach out. Our team is happy to work with you to make sure you feel supported, comfortable, and included throughout Jump Start.
