I am an Assistant Professor of Teaching in the Department of Asian Studies at UBC. I teach courses on Chinese language, literature, and English Chinese translation. I am also coordinator of advanced content based courses in the Chinese Language Program. My research interests tell how much I love literature and undergraduate education. I have studied English Literature and received my first doctoral degree from Beijing Foreign Studies University in 1997. At that time, I was keenly interested in Joseph Conrads life and works. Then I have switched to study more about literary theories in a global context and I have turned my focus of study to Classical Chinese literature and its thematic and generic reincarnation in modern and contemporary Chinese literature. In 2014, I received my second doctoral degree from the University of Toronto with my research on the fantastic as a motif that runs through Chinese classical tales, vernacular stories, and contemporary Chinese fiction. My interest in the fantastic continues in my undergraduate teaching. I have designed and delivered such undergraduate courses as CHIN 465 Fantasy in Chinese Literature. My research interest also finds a way into my translation works. I have published many Chinese translations, among which are A Portrait of The Artist as a Young Man by James Joyce, Wuthering Heights by Emily Bronte, and several monographs by contemporary writers and critics, such as Bruce Robbins The Cultural Left in Globalization: Critical Essays and Linda Hutcheons Ironys Edge: The Theory and Politics of Irony. My most recent research interest is more of a pedagogical nature. I am keen to find out more about how to set up an inclusive learning community in the classroom, how to help undergraduate students enhance their academic communication skills, and how to work with undergraduate students to discover a truly global view in students own studies.
