Welcome to UBC! My name is Blaire Steinwand and I am a faculty member of the Department of Zoology in the Faculty of Science. I teach first year students in the Biology program. I cannot wait to meet you and am thrilled to have the opportunity to serve as a resource during your transition to University. New beginnings are so challenging and so rewarding all at the same time. As a first generation student myself, I quickly learned the value of mentors when I was attending University and today as an Assistant Professor of Teaching I find that the highlight of my work is guiding and supporting students. My research interests have evolved over the years from plant molecular biology, to seafood forensics and marine ecology, and today centre on teaching and learning in biology education. In my free time I can be found outdoors cycling, hiking, snowshoeing, skiing, and love a full day in a book.
