Dr. Alfredo Ferreira is an educational linguist and Lecturer in the science stream of the Academic English Program at UBC Vantage College, in Vancouver, Canada, where he teaches first year credit bearing courses in research based academic writing and the languages of physics and mathematics. Alfredos classes emphasize participation in meaningful tasks, and extensions of learning to students individual academic, social, and personal interests. His main research interest is in instructed writing development across undergraduate and graduate studies in science and social science, focusing on development along the spectrum of concrete and abstract ideation. His research on teaching explores methods of explicit, language based instruction in content integrated language teaching and curricula. As an educational linguist and trained nature guide, Alfredo has also developed and guided hiking, canoeing, and camping study tours for international students focusing on enhancing students experiences and understanding of British Columbias natural and cultural heritage and the roles of language in framing these. Alfredo has presented his research internationally, taught graduate level research writing in Canada, Brazil, and Japan and, at UBC, has facilitated graduate writing workshops for the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies, UBC Library, Centre for Writing and Scholarly Communication, and Faculty of Education. Alfredos special instructional projects include the development of a free, online supplementary English language textbook for first year Physics courses and volunteering with the NGO Academics Without Borders in teaching research writing for publication to faculty at under resourced universities internationally.
